Finally, I finished my new picture wall. I decided to dedicate it to Egypt. I chose 30 pictures from my visits to the land of pharaohs.

P.S. I still have some of those old picture wall pics left. If you like some of them, I can mail your favourite pic. Just let me know...

El Alamein, the battlefield of the Second World War. An insignificant part of desert in the middle of nowhere. The place where Rommel and Montgomery led their troops against each other. The place is situated about 100 kilometres west from Alexandria.

The first day in Egypt was booked for the biggest and probably the most famous ancient sight, Giza and pyramids! We drove by bus (a luxury one with air condition and all) from the hotel we had stayed over night to the Citadel mosque area first. The place was beautiful but crowded. In Egypt it's possible to visit inside the mosque and it's allowed even for women although you happen to be infidel.

Today I found something amazing from the Alexandria bazaar area - an Egyptian mouse trap! It catches the mouse alive. Beware little mouse in the island, when I return, this trap will catch you!

It's time to start packing and jump into the stargate. I will continue the journey I did in December 2006. Then, I didn't have an opportunity to visit the machines of resurrection - the pyramids. Next Monday, I will be in Kairo.

I'm quite excited. I watched my old photos, here are some of them...

Amazingly nice were camels travelling on the modern(!) lorry if even enjoyed the cooling breeze...

2nd-Sep-2007 08:55 pm - Return to Egypt

I spent last weekend with a group of people who had all been in the Nile cruise with the world's best tourist guide Veli. Veli has been a guide for many years now and has charmed all travellers. Now he even arranged an opportunity for all Nile cruisers to gather in Finland. We met in a great place called castle Rantalinna. This time we made a short cruise by boat to Lake Saimaa and had fun in Rantalinna with people who love to travel, love Egypt and river Nile and of course love Veli! It was really fun to meet people who shared the same interests. I did my visit to Egypt last December and unfortunately there were no other people from the same trip with us this time, but I believe this will become a yearly happening so it's possible to see some of them next time. One of the highlights of this weekend was a dinner party where we all had costumes that were related to Egypt and its history. My costume was bought in Egypt (look at the picture, it's me!). The Egyptian salesman told me that I look just like Ali Baba, so I was Ali Baba but somehow my character turned to be a monk in the late evening. I coloured my beard black with mascara (I wasn't at all afraid that the colour was waterproof but after the party I did some work to clean my face!), I had the Egyptian "dress" and scarf, sandals. Some extra items were a sabre and a water bottle.

29th-Dec-2006 09:37 pm - "Good price, only for you"

Simple purchase in an Egyptian bazaar is something too complicated to a simple European person. You can never know what the price is if you want to buy something. You have to ask the price and you will hear some astronomical amount of money, like 150 LE (Egyptian pounds). Dickering is an essential part of commerce. You have to negotiate about the price long and poor your whole soul into it. You can offer 5 LE at first. The salesman will come down to 100 LE, you offer 10 LE, salesman 50 and so on. Finally the price can be 15 LE and you shake hands. The deal is done. If the salesman smiles, you paid too much. If he looks sad, you did good purchase. When I bought nice stone scarabs, I was smiling but the salesman wasn't. When I bought local clothes to our oriental party, the salesman was smiling very wide! Sometimes if the trade is good, the seller can serve a cup of tea, but I didn't see any tea cups after the cloth salesman (figuratively) robbed me. One of our groups sold his winter jacket, or in fact he swapped it for scarves. He smiled wide, the jacket was old and not so valuable. When you travel to the places where tourists have travelled many years, you will see shocking things like this text "HaLVaT hinnaT Tässä LiiKKassä". It's written in Finnish with a small spelling error, "cheap prices in this shop". Everybody knew one Finnish word, "terve - hello", but English was the language I used with them.
