After passing the iceroad (alive) I decided to visit Marjaniemi, "the lighthouse" place.

The official iceroad to Hailuoto was opened on Friday. I had never before driven by car on the frozen sea and of course I had to test the road because I happened to be nearby.

I spent two nights in the Luoto Hotel (again). That must be my favourite place to live when I'm on duty and have to work. In the evenings, I had some time of my own and walked a bit here and there...

Last weekend I visited Hailuoto Island. The weather surprised me badly because one week earlier there was no snow. My main purpose was to watch birds and the visit was not that bad although snow had scared some birds back to the south. I slept overnight in the lighthouse hotel. It's still one of the best hotels (for me) I've ever been. In the evening I played my guitar in the silent empty hotel when the wind howled in the corners and the lighthouse beam lighted the snowy harbour area.

Hailuoto is a small island near the city of Oulu in northern Finland. Ferry Merisilta brings you there in 25 minutes.

A moment before sun sets behind the sea an old wooden beacon of Keskiniemi looks mystical. The beacon was built in 1857 to guide sailors to the harbour of Oulu. Many tar barrels were shipped to other parts of Europe in the old days. Now the beacon stands still and brave the northern wind from the sea. In these days sailors don't ship tar any more and they navigate with modern technological equipments.
