We had Easter holidays and I decided to open my summer cottage season. The weather forecast was perfect, sunny days and +15 degrees of Celsius. As always, the forecast was a joke and the sky was cloudy. The highest temperature was probably +5 degrees. Anyway, I had a plan to heat the cottage and stay there for three days. Maybe I'll tell more about the rest of the visit later. Now I wanted to show you some pictures - mouse pictures!

At this point, I had armed my Egyptian mousetrap because I knew there was an uninvited visitor scratching inside the wall structures. I went to bed and slept less than an hour. A horrible BANG woke me up, the trap had worked. I searched my pocket light and found a mouse inside the trap! Finally I got it! I dressed up and walked with my catch to the old forest and released him.

PHEW, I just catched and released the mouse number four! I have so many mice here that I could prepare mouse stew when I make my lunch.

Today I visited the island again. I carried some food for birds and obviously for mice too. I was really happy when I noticed many Roe Deer trails around the cabin. It (or them) had been there recently. Blue, Willow and Great Tits enjoyed my sunflower seeds and grease lumps. I saw at least two mice collecting seeds for their own purposes. I'm almost sure that they belong to the big family of my dear Ivan!

Ivan's cousin... )

Ivan was a bit shocked after the rowing adventure but now he's comfortably watching TV and eating gingerbread near the candlelight warmth. He told me something about the meeting with his cousin in the island. Although they spoke a different dialect, they understood each other well. Ivan told me many things. Probably (for me) the most unpleasant news was that Ivan's cousin is a female - name is Linda - and she's planning of having about dozen little mice next February. GOOD GRIEF!

When I left the island I told Ivan to take care of the gingerbread house. Indeed he did. He had slightly misunderstood the task and arranged a feast with his cousin. Mice do eat gingerbread...

They spared some pieces for me, how nice! Under my pillow...

They had opened one Christmas present too - although there was MY name on it.

There's another mouse in my house! It was waiting and hiding in my mailbox in a small cardboard box and smartly whizzed inside. He had a cover story, which was almost unbelievable. He claimed that his long lost cousin is living in my cottage island! Now, he wanted to visit the island. Would you believe that? Jeez, I'm amazed.

Today I found something amazing from the Alexandria bazaar area - an Egyptian mouse trap! It catches the mouse alive. Beware little mouse in the island, when I return, this trap will catch you!

Last weekend, I saw the mouse. It's really tiny, really fast and way too intelligent. I've loaded the genius trap several times but it hasn't fallen into the trap. I don't understand how it can avoid falling in??? Usually it's moving when the cabin is dark...

8th-Sep-2008 11:08 pm - Sorry!
Oh, I'm sorry because I misled you. Those friendly wasps aren't that peace loving creatures after all. On the contrary, they are highly trained killer beasts. They can recognise those who belong to the regular inhabitants of the island - but if you aren't one of them, you are in BIG TROUBLE. Last weekend, I visited the island with my friend. My friend got attacked several times (only one hit), wasps followed the poor visitor around the yard and didn't let in peace before we left the island. However, I didn't have any problems myself. They don't bother me!

Another problem has appeared. Some weeks ago I heard some noises during the night time. A mouse or some mice had invaded the house. Last weekend they made the hell of a noise all around the night. The last point was when I found a mouse nest under my pillow! They (it?) ran through the room noisily, scratched somewhere in the wall structures and so on. I decided to buy a mousetrap.

I had to visit quite many shops before I found the first mousetrap. I think it's not so common to have a mouse problem in these days and that's why shops don't keep any traps in store. Anyway, I found one type of a trap. I didn't like the one. Its idea was to kill the mouse by cracking its neck! No, no, no!!! I don't want to kill mice, just catch them and release somewhere far from the cottage...

I think I have to make my own mousetrap.

edit. Forgot to tell that there's a Pygmy Owl in the island. I heard it whistling several times!
